One Racine-area state Senate race could help decide control of the chamber.

District 21 pits Jim Croft against Trevor Jung. The seat has been held since 2014 by Republican Van Wanggaard, who announced his retirement in March, leaving the race open with no incumbent.

Croft is running for political office for the first time. Jung currently serves as Racine's Public Transportation Director.

The race has drawn heavy spending. Campaign finance reports through Oct. 19 put Croft's spending at upwards of $2.6 million and Jung's at a little less than $2.3 million. By comparison, Wanggaard and his 2018 opponent spent a combined $240,000 that year.

Marquette University Law School research fellow John Johnson told FOX6 that Democrats' clearest path to a Senate majority runs through districts like this one, and that the outcome could also affect how much legislation a governor can pass. The district has been trending Democratic, with Kamala Harris winning it with 49.6% of the vote in 2024, and Republicans have controlled both chambers of the Legislature since 2010.
