Milwaukee police say the crash happened on Sunday night, Nov. 1, at the end of a pursuit that began when officers spotted a vehicle being driven recklessly near South 23rd Street and West Greenfield Avenue at about 10:09 p.m.

Officers turned around and found the vehicle again near South Muskego Avenue and West Mitchell Street. When they tried to pull it over, police say the driver refused to stop and a chase began.

The pursuit ended near South Layton Boulevard and West Greenfield Avenue, where the fleeing vehicle struck another vehicle. The 18-year-old driving the vehicle that was hit was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver police had been chasing, a 36-year-old man, was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for treatment. A 28-year-old woman riding in his vehicle was hospitalized with serious injuries, and police say illegal narcotics were found during the arrest.

Neighbors near the intersection told reporters they heard the collision from inside their homes. Crash data reviewed by TMJ4 shows Sunday's wreck was the third fatal crash near Layton and Greenfield in the past five years.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges against the 36-year-old driver will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
