Congregations United to Serve Humanity, known as CUSH, held its annual dinner in Kenosha on Thursday evening, Oct. 29, drawing a packed banquet hall.
CUSH is the Kenosha affiliate of WISDOM. Its members organize on criminal justice reform, election protection and other issues.
At the dinner, members honored local advocates for the homeless and the leadership of State Senator Bob Wirch, a Democrat from Kenosha.
Citizen Action's Robert Kraig delivered the keynote address, describing what he called a double crisis in democracy: attacks on its basic institutions and a failure to deliver for average people. He discussed the role people of faith are playing in efforts to defend and renew democracy.
Kraig argued that progress will have to come at the state level, and described planning by Citizen Action, WISDOM and aligned partners to push for action on health care, public education, criminal justice reform and other issues in the next legislative session.
