Democratic candidates for the State Legislature in the Chippewa Valley won all of their races on Tuesday, Nov. 3, completing a sweep of the region's state seats.

The 31st Senate District, which covers Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls and Menomonie, is made up of the 91st, 92nd and 93rd Assembly Districts. Sen. Jeff Smith and Reps. Jodi Emerson and Christian Phelps each retained their seats by more than 10 percentage points.

The change came in the 92nd District, where Democratic challenger Jeremiah Fredrickson defeated Republican Rep. Clint Moses by a little less than 2,000 votes. The district covers Chippewa Falls and Menomonie.

Fredrickson's win means all three Assembly districts inside the 31st Senate District are now held by Democrats. In a statement after declaring victory, he said voters had sent a message calling for leadership focused on families, farms and small businesses.

Statewide, Democrats flipped eight Assembly seats to take a 54-45 majority, won a Senate majority and won the governor's race, giving the party control of both legislative chambers and the governor's office for the first time since 2010. Results are unofficial until canvassed.
