Families had earlier options during the week, including pumpkin carving at Greenheck Turner Community Center, Halloween skates at the center, indoor trick-or-treating at Mount View Care Center on Friday from 3 to 5:30 p.m., and a Kids' Trick-or-Treat Trail at Monk Botanical Gardens on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., priced at $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

For trivia and comedy, Nevermore on Third hosted Spooky Trivia on Thursday, the Marathon County Public Library in Wausau holds Horror Trivia at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in its Community Room — free, for adults, with no registration needed — and Mosinee Brewing Company staged Improv-A-Ween on Friday.

The dressier end of the weekend included the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art's first Masquerade Ball on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Wausau Club, with tickets at $125 to support free art programming, a murder mystery dinner at Willow Springs Garden, and a Halloween voice recital by students at the Wausau Conservatory of Music on Friday.

Live music runs through Saturday night, from Defeatism, Auraborn and Elk Startled by Thunder at Nevermore on Third on Friday to WURK with Moonbadger and NUR-D at Faraway Place, a Whiskey & Lace Halloween Party at Q & Z Expo Center, Downtime Acoustic at Mosinee Brewing Company, and Metal at the Mish: HalloScream at The Intermission Bar.

Costume contests are also on the list, including at Pregame Pub, Trails End Lodge and Burks Bar, plus a Halloween party at Nevermore on Third and The Summoning Halloween Bash at Emerald Night Club. Clocks fall back Saturday night, adding an extra hour.
