A Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley staff member has received statewide recognition for his work with young people facing homelessness and housing insecurity.
DeShawn Dickinson, who serves as assistant director of the clubs' Home Base program, was given the Ren Svanoe Award by the Wisconsin Association of Runaway and Homeless Youth Services, the clubs announced. The annual award honors a person who shows outstanding commitment and compassion to runaway and homeless youth.
Home Base supports youth and families dealing with running away, homelessness or housing insecurity. Program overseer Katie Van Groll said Dickinson began the work shortly after college and has emphasized making sure young people feel safe, heard and valued.
Under Dickinson's leadership, the clubs say, Home Base has expanded its reach, served more youth and strengthened community partnerships.
His involvement also extends beyond the job, through mentorship and volunteer coaching with area youth.
