The 2026-27 curling season is getting underway at the Wausau Curling Center, at 1920 Curling Way on the city's southeast side. The Wausau Curling Club says the season ahead includes international and statewide competition, and notes that curlers have been playing the sport in Wausau for more than 125 years.

The club opened the season to newcomers with a free public open house on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 5 p.m., where visitors could see the ice, club room and seating areas and learn how the game is played and how its leagues and youth and senior programs work.

Learn to Curl and Rookie Orientation clinics followed on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon, and Sunday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost was $10 per person, with students and children free, and instructors taught participants how to slide, deliver the stone, sweep, and handle strategy and scoring. The club advised pre-registration and asked participants to bring a clean pair of rubber-soled shoes for the ice.

Recreational and regular league curling starts the week of Oct. 26. The winter calendar includes the Supper Club bonspiel the weekend of Nov. 13, the Kringle-Jingle stick spiel on Dec. 5, and a statewide Wisconsin Lions curling weekend Jan. 1-3 that is expected to bring as many as 200 curlers and family members to the area.

Two headline events follow in the new year. The Scottish Men's Curling Team, which tours U.S. curling clubs every five years, plays a local team in Wausau on Jan. 22 as part of a tour of the upper Midwest and East Coast. Then, Feb. 5-7, the center hosts the National Wheelchair Team Curling Championships. Later events include the Tietge high school meet Jan. 29-30, the state high school championships Feb. 19-20 — where the Wausau West girls are defending champions — and the Silver Spoon bonspiel for new curlers March 5-7. Events are free for spectators, and games are also live-streamed on the club's YouTube channel.
