Stevens Point officials are looking for ways to shorten voting lines after some voters waited up to three hours to cast ballots on Election Day, Nov. 3.
Mayor Mike Wiza and City Clerk Susan Pagel will ask the city council to spend $35,000 on six additional Badger Books, the electronic poll books used to check in voters, process same-day registrations and record absentee ballots.
The additional machines would be deployed where they are needed to help speed up voter check-in and ballot distribution.
The mayor is also calling for changes at the state level, such as allowing two in-person absentee voting locations, which he says would relieve pressure on Election Day.
The city's finance committee will consider the request on Monday, Nov. 9. If it passes there, the full council will have the final say later this month.
