The Marathon Center for Arts and Culture is a step closer to operating the former UWSP Wausau theater, after two Marathon County committees approved a one-year operating lease for the group.

The joint Education and Economic Development and Human Resources, Finance and Property committees voted to approve the lease. It would let the arts center begin operating the theater this winter.

Committee members were told the one-year lease is meant as a bridge. The group is still finalizing its nonprofit and property-tax-exemption paperwork.

The lease runs ahead of a planned acquisition of the building at the end of the year, described in the county discussion as a planned $1 sale.

Staff were also directed to negotiate recovery of insurance costs as part of the arrangement.
