La Crosse Public Schools held an open house on Oct. 29 to collect community feedback on the future of the Hintgen Elementary site.

The district is evaluating reuse for four school sites that are consolidating into two facilities. The consolidation follows a referendum under which Spence and Emerson schools are combined, and Hintgen and State Road schools are combined, closing the existing sites.

The district is working with Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. on a market analysis of the Hintgen property. Visual displays at the open house events present possible land-use scenarios to residents.

A report on community feedback is due to the school board in late December 2026 or early January 2027. The district expects the property to transfer to a new owner or purpose between August and October 2027.

The next open house is for Emerson Elementary on Nov. 5, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
