Wisconsin Democrats won control of the state Assembly in Tuesday's election, taking a majority in the chamber for the first time since the 2009-10 session.

Republicans began the cycle holding a 54-45 majority. Democrats said they won all eight seats they had targeted, including five districts carried by Kamala Harris in 2024 and three other Republican-held seats in River Falls, Weston and Menomonie, for a total of 53 seats.

In the Coulee Region, Rep. Steve Doyle, a Democrat from Onalaska, defeated Republican challenger Keith Purnell of Holmen by 56.7% to 43.3%, with 99% of votes counted, according to Associated Press calls.

Assembly Democratic leader Greta Neubauer of Racine called the result a historic night and said voters will expect the new majority to deliver. Outgoing Speaker Robin Vos, a Republican from Rochester, congratulated Democrats and said Republicans will spend the next two years preparing to seek a return to power.

The outcome gives Democrats a legislative trifecta alongside the governor's office and the Senate, according to Vos's statement on the results.
