Dairyland Power Cooperative announced on Oct. 28 that it is cancelling plans for the Nemadji Trail Energy Center, a proposed natural gas plant in Superior, and has asked the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to withdraw its permits.

The plant, known as NTEC, was planned as a 625-megawatt facility on the shores of Lake Superior. It was developed with South Shore Energy.

The proposal drew years of public opposition from Superior-area residents, Dairyland customers, members of the Fond du Lac and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa, and environmental organizations. Clean Wisconsin said it first intervened in the commission proceeding in 2019, and the fight continued in court and before local governments.

Opponents, including the Sierra Club, Clean Wisconsin and the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, welcomed the cancellation, calling it the end of a campaign that lasted more than seven years.
