Kenosha County teamed up with local law enforcement agencies on Saturday to give residents a safe way to get rid of unused and expired medications.

The collection ran as part of National Drug Take Back Day, with sites open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents could drop off medication at five places: the county's new Human Services Building at 3500 52nd Street, the Walmart in Somers, the county center in Bristol, the Twin Lakes Police Department and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

According to the county, Wisconsin has led the nation in the amount of medication collected at each of the past 10 consecutive national take-back events.

The program is meant to keep unneeded medications out of homes, where they could be misused, and to keep them from being disposed of improperly.
