With winter approaching, Kenosha's Department of Public Works is reminding residents and property owners that city rules require snow and ice to be cleared from sidewalks within 24 hours after a storm ends, and that failing to do so can bring fines.
The requirement covers more than sidewalks. Properties next to accessible ramps must clear the full width of the ramp and the adjoining curbline, and residents are also asked to keep fire hydrants, roadway inlets and mailboxes clear so firefighters, drainage and mail delivery are not blocked.
Snow cannot be shoveled, blown or dumped into public streets or alleys. The city says snow has to stay on the property where it fell, and violations can be reported to the Department of Public Works and may result in fines.
For driveways and sidewalks, officials suggest pushing snow toward the house and onto front lawns where possible, which leaves more room in parkways for plows and can reduce the pile left at the end of a driveway. Garbage and recycling carts should be placed in a cleared spot on the lawn or parkway, or beside the driveway approach and out of the street.
Residents are also urged to watch for snow emergency announcements and parking restrictions during major storms. More information on winter operations is available from Public Works at 262-653-4050.
