Fox News has changed its rating for Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District from "Lean R" to "Toss-Up," according to a campaign release from Democratic challenger Mitchell Berman that WisPolitics published.

The district, which includes Racine and Kenosha counties, is represented by Republican Bryan Steil. Berman, who works as an emergency room nurse, is challenging him in the Nov. 3 election.

The Berman campaign pointed to a recent House Majority PAC poll that put Berman ahead of Steil by a single point, 48 percent to 47 percent. It said two other public polls have also put the contest within one point.

The campaign also noted that the Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball have recently moved their ratings in Berman's direction, and that the race is on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's "Red to Blue" priority list.

Berman framed his candidacy around the cost of everyday needs such as fuel, groceries and health care. He said emergency room staff treat patients regardless of party or donations, and said that is the approach he would take to Washington.

The campaign described the seat as one of the most competitive House races in the country heading into Election Day.
