A West Allis police officer shot a 31-year-old man Tuesday night during a scheduled probation and parole home visit near South 71st Street and West Grant Street, according to the West Allis Police Department.

Police said officers were working with Wisconsin Department of Corrections probation and parole agents around 9:20 p.m. on Oct. 27, conducting scheduled home checks of people under community supervision in the city.

During a visit at a home in the 2200 block of South 71st Street, officers encountered the subject of the visit, who police said was armed with a firearm. During the encounter, an officer fired and struck the man.

Officers gave the man aid until the West Allis Fire Department arrived, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. No officers, probation and parole agents or other civilians were injured.

The officers involved were placed on administrative duty under department protocol. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is investigating the shooting, with the Waukesha Police Department as the lead agency, and police said the information released so far is preliminary.
