Some Pleasant Prairie voters received duplicate absentee ballot packets in the mail, the village announced Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The village said the duplicate packets were issued Monday, Oct. 26, while absentee ballot mailings were being processed and prepared. It described the number of affected voters as limited, but did not give a figure.
Village Clerk Jane Snell heads the clerk's office, which administers village elections and handles absentee ballots. The announcement blamed an unnamed employee and said that employee is no longer employed by the village. It did not say whether the person resigned or was fired.
Officials said they began reviewing absentee ballot records after the problem was discovered to determine how many voters were affected. The village said duplicate ballots will not be counted and that it is cooperating with election authorities.
The village said it is reviewing ballot issuance and tracking procedures, and listed possible changes including added verification, improved documentation, reconciliation of records and a second review of ballot issuance.
Voters who received duplicate packets were told to contact the Village Clerk's Office for instructions and were cautioned not to submit more than one ballot.
