About 7,000 lead service lines remain in Kenosha, the Kenosha Water Utility said Tuesday, Oct. 27, as it expanded outreach about replacement assistance.

General Manager Curt Czarnecki said the utility has already removed more than 2,000 lead service lines over the last several years and is working to bring the remaining number to zero.

Funding is limited and assistance will be prioritized, the utility said. Eligibility depends on the property, household, program requirements and available funding. Households do not need to wait for a letter or postcard, and residents can reach out even if they do not know what their service line is made of.

Residents, including renters, can call 262-653-4315 or visit KWULSLP.org, which has program information, a service-line property map and answers to common questions.

The utility said lead is not present in water leaving its treatment plant, but can enter drinking water through lead service lines or older household plumbing. Replacement work is already underway at eligible properties in designated project areas.

The announcement came during National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Oct. 25-31, and Children's Health Month.
