Democrat Mitchell Berman won the race for Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday night, defeating Republican incumbent Bryan Steil.
The result was one of two U.S. House seats Democrats flipped in Wisconsin. The state's House delegation went into Election Day with six Republicans and two Democrats and ended the night split four and four.
The 1st District covers all of Racine and Kenosha counties, most of Walworth County and parts of southern Milwaukee and eastern Rock counties. Republicans had held the seat for more than 30 years, and forecasters had rated the race as the most competitive in southeast Wisconsin.
Berman is a registered nurse with more than 23 years of experience in health care. He earned a nursing assistant license at age 17 and was a first-generation college graduate.
His campaign listed priorities including raising the federal minimum wage, lowering child care and prescription drug costs, bringing down energy costs and restoring the Affordable Care Act with a public option.
