A 64-year-old Readstown woman was listed in stable condition Wednesday after she was hit by a passing vehicle Tuesday morning on State Highway 131 south of Viola, in the Town of Kickapoo.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said Lori Anne Breeze was driving a 2013 Ford Escape northbound at about 7:15 a.m. on Oct. 27 when her vehicle struck a deer. She pulled onto the shoulder and got out of the vehicle.

While she was outside the vehicle, she was struck by a southbound 2012 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Kimberlyna J. Threet, 49, of rural Viola. Threet reported no injuries at the scene but was later evaluated by Readstown Emergency Medical Service.

The Kickapoo Valley Rescue Squad took Breeze to a helicopter landing zone, where UW Health Med Flight airlifted her to Emplify Health by Gundersen in La Crosse. The Readstown Fire Department assisted at the scene and set up the landing zone, and the Kickapoo Area School District also provided support during the response.

Highway 131 stayed closed for more than three hours and reopened at about 10:30 a.m. The Vernon County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the crash.
