Madison police are investigating four homicides in the city in one week. Two of the killings happened hours apart on Friday night, and police say detectives are following up on every lead in the cases.
In the first Friday-night shooting, officers were sent to the 2300 block of Calypso Road on the city's north side around 8:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, after multiple people reported hearing gunshots outside an apartment building. Officers found a 21-year-old man shot inside a car, and he later died at a hospital.
Police say multiple shell casings were recovered in the road, and a bullet entered a nearby apartment, coming within inches of a person inside watching TV. A passenger in the victim's car was not injured.
Detectives identified two persons of interest in the Calypso Road shooting. A search warrant was carried out at an apartment on Brentwood Parkway, and both men were taken into custody on separate charges while the homicide investigation continues.
Hours later, around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, officers heading to a disturbance involving a couple dozen people outside a bar in the 1200 block of Regent Street heard a shot fired. They found a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound, and he died at a hospital despite life-saving care at the scene.
No arrests had been made in the Regent Street shooting as of Saturday morning, and detectives were reviewing digital evidence and still working to determine a motive. The department's Violent Crime Unit is leading both investigations, and anyone with information or video about the Regent Street shooting can contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers through p3tips.com.
