An Extension educator reported on Oct. 27 on facilitating a climate resilience workshop in September that drew leaders from four central Wisconsin counties.
The workshop brought together participants from Waupaca, Marathon, Portage and Wood counties to focus on climate resilience and nature-based solutions in response to weather events.
The educator said flooding and tornadoes were central concerns, and facilitated an open discussion where participants explored responses including green plantings.
A committee member who also attended said flash flooding was a major topic, particularly in counties west of Portage, and described erosion problems in Wood County that led some areas toward strip cropping and other preventive measures. The member compared that work to berm work done in Waupaca County to stop water from creating gullies.
The member said some participants treated the issues personally, pushing state and county officials for preventive methods to protect their homes. The educator said the response showed a continuing need for this kind of programming and indicated plans to continue similar work.
