Warm late-October weather set records in the Northland on Saturday, Oct. 24, before a cold front brought cooler, more seasonal air for Sunday.
Ashland matched its record high of 79 degrees on Oct. 24, a mark first set in 1963. Duluth reached 70 degrees, one degree short of its Oct. 24 record of 71 degrees set in 1998.
It was the fifth day this October that Duluth reached at least 70 degrees. On average, October sees only two such days, and the last October with five or more was 2011.
Behind the front, highs on Sunday were expected in the upper 40s to mid-50s. Temperatures in Duluth were expected to approach freezing Sunday and Monday mornings, but it was unclear whether the city would reach 32 degrees.
If no freeze occurred on either morning, Duluth would be on pace for at least its fourth-latest first freeze on record. Showers were expected to end across northwest Wisconsin on Saturday night, with more rain chances late Monday into Wednesday and no snow expected.
