Winnebago County voters have picked their next sheriff.

Democrat Jason Rippl won Tuesday's election with nearly 51 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Darin Rice and independent Danielle Falesnik.

The three candidates were vying to succeed Sheriff John Matz, who is retiring after 16 years in the office.

Sheriff's races were also decided elsewhere in the region Tuesday. In Waupaca County, incumbent Sheriff Timothy Wilz received nearly 59 percent of the vote to defeat challenger Justin Malueg. In Waushara County, Republican Zachary Gunderson won with 69 percent of the vote over Democrat Nina Monacelli.

Results are unofficial until they are canvassed.
