Republican Michael Alfonso has won the race for Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District, defeating Democrat Fred Clark, a former state lawmaker.
The Associated Press called the race for Alfonso at 10:02 p.m. Tuesday. Unofficial results showed Alfonso with 56.1 percent of the vote to Clark's 43.9 percent, with 79 percent of votes counted.
At 26 years old, Alfonso will become the youngest member of Congress. He is the son-in-law of U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who previously represented the district in the House.
Alfonso will replace Republican Tom Tiffany, who gave up the seat to run for governor. The 7th District is Wisconsin's largest geographically, covering much of northern and north-central Wisconsin, including Marathon, Lincoln, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas counties.
Clark watched the results with supporters in Washburn and said he was disappointed, while noting his campaign had drawn support from former Republicans and independent voters. He advised his successor to visit communities across the district and talk with people who did not vote for him, saying a representative's job is to represent everybody.
