Wisconsin anglers are working under a new rule for several detrimental fish species, including species found in Lake Superior and the Duluth-Superior harbor area.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said the Natural Resources Board approved a permanent rule that took effect Nov. 1, changing possession and bag limits for round gobies and other detrimental species on waters across the state.
Under the rule, gobies and ruffe taken from any waterbody can be kept without limit, but they must be immediately eviscerated or decapitated, or have their gills removed. Anglers may also possess an unlimited number of white perch, with the same handling requirement for white perch taken on inland waters.
The DNR is still asking anglers to report gobies caught in the Winnebago System through its online reporting tool, and to report any detrimental species caught in inland waters to the local fisheries biologist.
