A new lake sturgeon rearing effort in Duluth has put its first fish into the St. Louis River, the waterway that forms the border between Duluth and Superior before reaching Lake Superior.

The Great Lakes Aquarium is now raising sturgeon in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, according to reporting summarized by The Gillnet from Outdoor News.

On Nov. 3, the partners released 255 tagged fingerlings into the river. This year is described as the first of several planned releases.

The aquarium plans a new rearing building and a public exhibit. When finished, the facility could raise up to 3,500 sturgeon a year for stocking in the river.

Duluth-area DNR Fisheries Supervisor Dan Wilfond took part in the Nov. 3 release.
