David Crowley will be Wisconsin's next governor after defeating Republican Tom Tiffany in Tuesday's general election.

With 71 of 72 counties reporting, Crowley had 1,430,799 votes, or 54.1 percent, to 1,212,872 votes, or 45.8 percent, for Tiffany in unofficial returns — a margin of about 218,000 votes.

Tiffany conceded in Wausau about 20 minutes after the race was projected, congratulating Crowley and wishing him and his family well as he prepares to take office.

In his victory remarks in Milwaukee, Crowley said Wisconsin is neither a red state nor a blue state and that in a state this close, nobody gets to govern alone.

Marathon County backed Tiffany, 34,468 votes to 26,381 for Crowley, or 56.6 percent to 43.4 percent. Statewide, Crowley flipped Brown, Winnebago, Kenosha and Racine counties from four years ago, when Gov. Tony Evers won by about 90,000 votes.
