A Milwaukee man who spent months on the run and was featured on "Wisconsin's Most Wanted" will spend 30 years in prison for killing a man outside a north side liquor store in 2024.
Milwaukee County Judge Michelle Havas sentenced DeAndre Williams, 23, on Oct. 15 to 30 years in prison, followed by 10 years of extended supervision, with credit for nearly two years of time already served. Williams pleaded guilty in June to first-degree reckless homicide.
The victim was Romell Campbell, 41. Prosecutors said Campbell stepped out of the liquor store near 23rd Street and Capitol Drive to smoke a cigarette on the night of Sept. 23, 2024, while Williams was inside talking about the shooting death earlier that day of a 17-year-old he considered like a brother. As Williams left the store, he confronted Campbell, struck him in the face and shot him, according to the criminal complaint. Campbell told an officer he had been shot in the back and died at a hospital less than an hour later.
Williams was charged in September 2024 and fled. After he was featured on "Wisconsin's Most Wanted," the U.S. Marshals Service said he surrendered in February 2025 after seeing himself on the segment.
While he was in jail awaiting trial in 2025, prosecutors filed a separate case charging Williams with four counts of solicitation of first-degree intentional homicide, accusing him of trying to hire a fellow inmate to kill witnesses in the homicide case, according to court records reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
