Two people were killed Thursday evening in the Town of Peshtigo when a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop crashed into another vehicle, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.

Investigators said a Marinette County sheriff's deputy tried to stop a vehicle carrying two people near Pine Street and Maple Street at about 6:38 p.m. on Oct. 22. The driver did not stop, and the deputy pursued.

About three minutes later, at about 6:41 p.m., the fleeing vehicle crashed into a second vehicle near the Old Peshtigo Road entrance to a gas station at Old Peshtigo Road and Country Meadows Road. Both people in the second vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two people in the fleeing vehicle were seriously injured and were taken to medical facilities in the Milwaukee area. No law enforcement officers were injured.

The deputy involved was placed on administrative duty under agency policy. The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, with help from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Marinette Police Department and a DCI crime response specialist, and will send its reports to the Marinette County District Attorney when the review is complete.
