Two deer harvested on the Menominee Reservation have tested positive for chronic wasting disease, the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin said.

One deer was taken in the Jackson Creek area and the other near Southeast Pine Lake. According to the tribe, every positive CWD result on the reservation so far has come from its southeast corner.

Along with announcing the results, the reservation reminded hunters of its longstanding ordinance that bans deer baiting.

Chronic wasting disease is a fatal, infectious disease that affects the nervous systems of deer, moose, elk and caribou. It was first detected in Wisconsin in 2002, and health officials say there are no known cases of human infection from contact with deer or venison.
