Minnesota's Commission on Judicial Selection has recommended three candidates to fill a vacancy in the state's 6th Judicial District, Minnesota Lawyer reported Oct. 16.

The vacancy will occur when Judge Leslie E. Beiers retires. The seat is chambered in Duluth in St. Louis County.

One candidate is Lilo Stuecher, a senior assistant St. Louis County attorney in Duluth who represents the Public Health and Human Services Division. She previously directed pro bono services for Justice North, the legal aid provider for northeastern Minnesota, and taught kindergarten and first grade before entering law.

Another is Vicky Wanta, an assistant county attorney who prosecutes serious felony cases in the Adult Criminal Division. She also teaches in the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College law enforcement program, serves as a special assistant U.S. attorney, and has served on the St. Louis County Mental Health Court and Drug Court teams.

The third is Aaron Welch, a senior assistant county attorney in the Range Criminal Division, serving the Virginia and Hibbing offices. He previously clerked for Judge Randall J. Slieter of Minnesota's 8th Judicial District and serves on the Iron Range Equal Justice Committee and the North St. Louis Domestic Violence Team.

The three names now go forward for consideration to fill the vacancy.
