Racine police are still investigating a hit-and-run that badly injured a pedestrian in Uptown Racine on Friday night, Oct. 16.

Officers say 48-year-old Gib Rangel was crossing the street in the 1300 block of Washington Avenue at about 7 p.m. when he was struck. He was left in critical condition.

As of Tuesday, Rangel had been through several surgeries and was still sedated. Relatives described a long recovery ahead and said they have been traveling back and forth between Racine and Froedtert as they wait for him to respond.

No arrest had been made as of Tuesday. Racine Police Sgt. Alicia Mitchell said investigators were looking for a vehicle and a person of interest, but she could not release further details while the investigation continues. The family is asking anyone who saw anything that night to come forward.

Relatives describe Rangel, known to many as Gibby, as outgoing and quick to make a room laugh. They have launched a GoFundMe to help with medical costs and are planning a fundraiser on Nov. 14, from 3 to 11 p.m., at La Esquina Del Barrio, 1518 Washington Ave.
