Milwaukee police say a 4-year-old girl was shot and killed early Saturday after a 6-year-old got hold of a firearm inside a home on the city's northwest side.
Officers responded shortly before 9 a.m. to a home just north of 53rd and Center. Police said the 6-year-old obtained the gun and fired it, striking the 4-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members identified the girl as Jurnee. A cousin told TMJ4 the two children were playing a game of "cops and robbers" when they got hold of the weapon, and said the family believed the gun had been stored securely and does not know how the children were able to access it.
Police said a 16-year-old is in custody in connection with the incident for possessing a firearm. Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
Neighbors described a heavy police response and an officer coming out of the home in tears. Milwaukee police are urging gun owners to take proper steps to store and secure firearms so children cannot get to them.
