A Milwaukee woman will spend 25 years in prison for a March 2025 shooting near 107th Street and Granville Road that killed a mother of four and wounded her younger sister.
April Miller, 51, pleaded guilty in June to first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree reckless injury. In August, Judge David Swanson sentenced her to 25 years in prison, with credit for more than a year already served, followed by 15 years of extended supervision.
On Oct. 8, Miller was ordered to pay $12,730 in restitution to a victim and another $30,920 to the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Crime Victim Compensation Fund — $43,650 in all — closing out the case.
The shooting happened around 1:40 a.m. Brenisha Butcher, 33, a mother of four, was found dead in the driver's seat of a white Volkswagen that had crashed into a parked vehicle across from a bar. Her younger sister Brittney, 30, was shot, wounded and taken to a hospital.
According to the criminal complaint, Miller was sitting in the front passenger seat of a gray Nissan when she pointed a gun at the Volkswagen and fired multiple times. Witnesses told police that neither Miller nor the victims had been involved in the fight at the bar that broke out shortly before the shooting.
Miller was arrested two days later at a hotel. Detectives recovered a gun believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, according to court filings.
