A Kenosha building that has stood for nearly a century is moving closer to possible demolition. The site was long used as the Eagles Club and was more recently known as Marina Shores.

City Planner Rachel Gasper confirmed that a demolition notification was sent to the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office on Oct. 2. That state review is still underway.

Members of the city's Historic Preservation Commission looked for ways to keep the building standing during months of discussion. Commission member Jan Michalski said he believes the building is very likely to be torn down, despite those efforts.

For many residents, the building holds personal history. It hosted weddings, receptions and other community gatherings over generations, and its past also includes performances by Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens.

The owners have pointed to extensive water damage and repair estimates between $2.2 million and $2.5 million. Demolition is not yet final: the owners would still need a city demolition permit, and no demolition date has been confirmed.
