Households in northwestern Wisconsin can pick up a free kit to help seal drafts and cut heat loss this winter, under an expanded distribution run by Wild Rivers Habitat for Humanity.

The organization, with partial sponsorship from Focus on Energy, plans to give out up to 1,000 kits between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15, 2026. The kits contain practical supplies intended to reduce drafts and heat loss and make homes more comfortable in cold weather.

Kits will be available at 18 distribution sites in communities including Ashland, Bayfield, Bruce, Cameron, Frederic, Hayward, Ladysmith, Rice Lake, Shell Lake, Spooner, Superior and Webster. Host sites include libraries, senior centers, veterans service offices, thrift stores and community agencies.

There is no cost, no advance registration and no income check. Kits are limited to one per household and are given out first come, first served during each site's regular hours while supplies last, so residents are encouraged to go early.

Executive director Jennifer Johnson said using local partners makes the kits easier for rural households to reach. The effort is part of the organization's broader housing work, which includes home repairs, accessibility and aging-in-place help, and housing education, aimed in part at seniors, veterans, families and households on limited budgets.
