Wisconsin Forest Products Week runs Oct. 18-24, with events and behind-the-scenes tours meant to show how sustainably managed forests become everyday products.
The week opens Monday, Oct. 19, with a trivia night at Rhinelander Brewing Company from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Alicia Cramer of the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities is scheduled to give opening remarks.
Industry tours run Oct. 19-23 at sites across the state, from nurseries and forests to paper mills and sawmills. The week closes with a morning of hands-on science and engineering activities for high school students on Friday, Oct. 23, at Boston School Forest in Plover.
UW-Stevens Point programs — the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology, the Wisconsin Forestry Center and the LEAF K-12 forestry education program — are leading the celebration with industry, government and community partners, including the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Organizers note that forest products account for about 11 percent of Wisconsin manufacturing jobs, contribute about $42 billion to the state economy and support about 126,000 jobs.
