The Between the Bluffs Plein Air Festival is finishing its 13th year in La Crosse, where artists have been painting outdoors since Oct. 2 at spots along the bluffs, in parks and along the river.

The work focuses on the Driftless Area — its landscapes, river views and older buildings — all painted on location rather than in a studio.

Artist demonstrations were held Oct. 10, and the festival's Quick Paint Competition is set for Friday, Oct. 16, giving visitors a chance to watch paintings come together in a short window.

The closing celebration is an opening reception and awards night on Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at Gallery 1802, where the freshly finished paintings will be shown and awards presented.

Art sales continue Saturday, Oct. 17, for anyone who wants to take an original piece home.
